What is the interior design cost in India in 2026?

For a complete home, the interior design cost in India usually lands between ₹1,500 and ₹4,500+ per sq ft of carpet area. The lower end covers essential modular furniture in laminate with standard hardware; the upper end covers premium finishes, custom joinery, layered lighting and decor. These are indicative Delhi NCR market figures and always depend on materials and scope.

Most people search for a single "interior cost per sq ft" number, but that number hides three very different things: fixed furniture (kitchen, wardrobes, TV unit), civil and services work (false ceiling, electrical, painting, flooring), and loose items (sofas, curtains, rugs, lights). A quote that looks cheap often leaves one of these out. Before you compare two proposals, check that both cover the same three buckets.

Carpet area matters here. A 1,200 sq ft super built-up flat in Delhi NCR often has roughly 850–950 sq ft of carpet area, so always ask which area a per sq ft quote is based on.

Interior cost per sq ft by room

Kitchens and wardrobes absorb the largest share of any budget, often 45–55% of the total. That is because they are carcass-heavy, hardware-heavy and priced on running feet or shutter area rather than floor area.

For the kitchen specifically, the gap between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹6 lakh is mostly shutters (laminate versus acrylic or PU), hardware (basic channels versus soft-close tandem boxes and corner units), countertop (granite versus quartz) and appliances. 2BHK, 3BHK and villa interior budgets

A 2BHK usually needs about ₹6–15 lakh for full interiors and a 3BHK about ₹9–25 lakh in Delhi NCR, with luxury projects going higher. Villas and kothis vary much more because of the extra floors, staircases, double-height walls and outdoor areas.

What pushes the interior cost up or down?

Five factors decide most of the final number: board grade, shutter finish, hardware, amount of custom work and site condition. Change any one of them and the per sq ft rate moves noticeably.

1. Board grade. MR (moisture resistant) plywood is fine for bedrooms and living areas; BWP (boiling water proof) plywood is the sensible choice under the kitchen sink and in bathrooms. 2. Shutter finish. Laminate is the most economical; acrylic and PU add roughly 30–70% to the shutter cost; natural veneer with lacquer sits at the top.
3. Hardware. Soft-close hinges, tandem drawers, lift-up systems and pull-out corner units can add ₹40,000 to well over ₹1.5 lakh in a kitchen alone.
4. Custom work. Curved niches, arched shelving, fluted panelling and sculpted mirrors are made by hand and priced accordingly. They are where a home gets its character, so it helps to spend here selectively rather than everywhere.
5. Site condition. Uneven walls, seepage, old wiring and low ceiling heights all add preparation work before any furniture goes in.

Hidden costs most homeowners miss

Plan for an extra 10–15% over the quoted interior cost to cover items that are often excluded. Clarify each of these in writing before work starts.

• Electrical changes: new points, a dedicated line for the hob and chimney, conduits for ceiling lights, and MCB upgrades.
• Plumbing shifts: moving the sink, adding a water purifier point or a washing machine outlet.
• Countertops and backsplash: sometimes quoted separately from the kitchen carcass.
• Appliances and sanitaryware: hob, chimney, built-in oven, taps, WC, geysers.
• Loose furniture and furnishing: sofa, dining set, beds, mattresses, curtains, rugs and cushions.
• Society charges: many Delhi NCR societies ask for a refundable interior deposit, lift protection and restrict work hours.
• Deep cleaning and debris removal at handover.
• GST, which may or may not be included in the per sq ft figure you were given.

Spend on what you touch daily and what is hard to change later; save on what is easy to upgrade. That single rule prevents most budget regrets.

• Use BWP ply and good hinges in the kitchen, but choose laminate shutters instead of acrylic in secondary bedrooms.
• Keep wardrobe interiors simple (shelves, one hanging rail, two drawers) and add accessories later.
