What does good balcony design involve?
Good balcony design begins with the conditions, not the cushions: which direction it faces, how much sun and rain it gets, how water drains and how much weight the slab can take. Once those are clear, the decor becomes easy.
Most apartment balconies in Faridabad, Gurgaon and Noida are 4–6 ft deep and 8–14 ft long. At that size, every choice counts:
- Orientation: west-facing balconies get harsh afternoon sun from April to June and need blinds or a pergola-style shade; north-facing ones suit ferns and shade plants.
- Drainage: check the floor slope (about 1:100 towards the outlet) before adding tiles or deck, or water will pool during the monsoon.
- Load: large soil-filled planters are heavy; keep them near the wall and beams rather than at the cantilevered edge.
- Society rules: many housing societies restrict glazing or changes to the facade, so we check before proposing enclosures.
- Use: decide whether the balcony is mainly for tea, plants, drying clothes or work. A utility balcony needs a ceiling-hung dryer and a tap; a sit-out needs shade and a socket.
In independent kothis and builder floors in older Faridabad sectors, balconies and terraces are often larger and more exposed, so waterproofing and shade become the first priority. For whole-house upgrades of this kind, see our old house renovation service.
Balcony decoration ideas for small spaces
For a small balcony, use fold-away or wall-hung furniture, vertical planters and one strong floor finish. These balcony decoration ideas free the floor while still making the space feel finished.
- Built-in bench with storage: a 400–450 mm deep bench along the short wall stores gardening tools and cushions.
- Folding bistro set: a 600 mm round table and two chairs fit even a 4 ft deep balcony.
- Railing planters: hooked planters on the inside of the railing keep the floor clear.
- Swing chair: only if the ceiling slab can take the load and there is at least 900 mm clear swing space.
- Outdoor rug: a polypropylene rug adds colour and is easy to wash after a dust storm.
- Privacy screen: a cane, WPC or metal jaali screen blocks direct views from neighbouring towers without cutting airflow.

Planning a balcony garden that survives NCR weather
A balcony garden in Delhi NCR survives when you choose hardy plants, use a light potting mix and plan drainage and watering from day one. Extreme summer heat and winter smog are harder on plants than most people expect.
- Plants that cope well: areca palm, snake plant, money plant, bougainvillea, jade, curry leaf and tulsi for sunny spots; ferns, peace lily and philodendron for shade.
- Soil: mix cocopeat and compost with garden soil to cut the weight of each planter.
- Waterproofing: planters should sit on stands or feet so water does not stain or seep into the slab. Built-in planter boxes need a proper membrane lining.
- Watering: a simple drip kit with a timer on the balcony tap saves plants during holidays.
- Pigeons: a clear or black bird net installed neatly on the outer face keeps the garden and furniture clean.
Best flooring and materials for balconies
The best balcony flooring is slip-resistant, heat-tolerant and easy to wash; matte porcelain tiles and WPC decking are the most practical choices for NCR apartments.
| Material | Pros | Cons | Indicative cost (supply + fix) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matte / anti-skid porcelain tiles | Durable, easy to clean, many wood looks | Can get hot in direct sun | ₹120 – ₹300 per sq ft |
| WPC decking tiles | Warm look, interlocking, removable | Needs cleaning under tiles | ₹180 – ₹400 per sq ft |
| Artificial grass | Soft, green, instant look | Traps dust; fades in harsh sun | ₹60 – ₹150 per sq ft |
| Natural stone (Kota, sandstone) | Cool underfoot, long-lasting | Heavier; needs sealing | ₹150 – ₹350 per sq ft |
For furniture, powder-coated aluminium, synthetic rattan and treated teak handle the weather best. Cushions should use outdoor fabric with quick-dry foam. All costs above are indicative and depend on brand and site conditions.
Lighting and ceilings for balconies
Balcony lights should be outdoor-rated (IP65 or higher), warm white and low glare, so the space feels inviting at night without lighting up the neighbours.
- Wall washers or up-lights on a textured wall create depth.
- Warm 2700K string lights or a single lantern add a cafe feel.
- A cement-board or PVC ceiling in a wood finish handles humidity better than standard gypsum.
- A weather-proof socket lets you run a small fan or a speaker safely.
We plan these on the same drawing as your indoor lights through our lighting design service, so the view from the living room flows outside.
Balcony design cost and our process
Indicatively, a balcony makeover in Delhi NCR costs about ₹40,000 to ₹3 lakh or more, depending on the flooring, built-in furniture, glazing and planting.
- Refresh with flooring, planters and lighting: roughly ₹40,000 – ₹1 lakh.
- Full design with bench, ceiling, screen and garden: roughly ₹1 lakh – ₹2 lakh.
- Glass-enclosed balcony converted into a sit-out or study: ₹2 lakh – ₹3 lakh and above, subject to society approval.
Our process is simple: site visit, a 3D view, material samples, then a 2–4 week execution depending on scope. Balconies are often done alongside a living room interior design project because the two are seen together. Frequently asked questions
Which flooring is best for an open balcony?
Matte anti-skid porcelain tiles are the most practical for open balconies in NCR because they handle rain, sun and frequent washing. WPC decking tiles are a good option if you want a warmer, wood-like surface that can be lifted later.
Can I enclose my balcony with glass?
It depends on your housing society rules and local building regulations, since enclosures change the facade. Where it is allowed, sliding glass with blinds can turn a balcony into a usable sit-out or study. We check the rules before proposing it.
Which plants grow well on a Delhi NCR balcony?
Bougainvillea, jade, snake plant, areca palm, curry leaf and tulsi handle sunny balconies well. For shaded balconies, ferns, peace lily, philodendron and money plant do better. Use a light soil mix and pots with drainage holes.
How do I stop pigeons from sitting on my balcony?
A neatly installed bird net on the outer face of the balcony is the most reliable solution. Spikes on ledges help too. Removing open food and water sources also reduces pigeon visits over time.
Is a swing safe on an apartment balcony?
A ceiling-hung swing needs a strong RCC slab and a rated anchor, plus enough clear space to swing. Where the slab is not suitable, a floor-standing swing frame is a safer option that still gives the same relaxed feel.
How long does a balcony makeover take?
A simple makeover with flooring, planters and lights usually takes one to two weeks. Full designs with built-in seating, ceilings, screens or glazing take around three to four weeks after the design is approved.
